South African wines were the theme at Doug and Joanne Williams’ home this past week as the last wine appreciation dinner of the current season was held. All 14 of our group attended, some in colourful African outfits and safari togs.
The evening held many welcome surprises, beginning with Doug’s announcement that the wine cost was...
Well, that certainly got our attention.
What folllowed was an amazing and delicious selection of hidden gems, and a reminder that South Africa has some of the best wine bargains around. The winning white was Blouberg White by Stellenbosch Farmers’ Winery at $7.99.
The winning red was a smooth Cabernet Sauvignon with a name that suited it well - Poetry. At $12.99, wow, it’s pretty hard to find a better red wine at that price point in BC. Finally, a sweeter red wine, lovely with dessert, was Jam Jar at $13.99.
As always, our sit-down dinner was absolutely gourmet. It was the perfect ending to a very enjoyable year of learning about wines and sharing great food amidst laughter and friendship.
