Our April 25th speaker is Matt Beckett, who will speak to us on behalf of the Capital Campaign Cabinet about L'Arche Comox Valley and their current capital campaign, "The Anchorage":

L’Arche is a community of people with and without intellectual disabilities sharing life together.
The story of L’Arche Comox Valley began over 30 years ago with Lock and Joanne Mawhinney. A well-known educator and pioneer in Special Needs education and inclusion, Lock realized that efforts to give people with developmental disabilities access to education was only part of a bigger solution. After they left school, they were isolated, many lacking any meaningful relationships outside their families.
The L’Arche model came to the couple’s attention. They were inspired by L’Arche’s unique vision of community inclusion and the way they saw people’s lives enriched by belonging. Other like-minded people joined them, and in 1993 the Friends of L’Arche Comox Valley was registered as a non-profit society.
Today, L’Arche offers community support and activities for participants through the I Belong Centre and living support (housing/suites) offered at the I Belong Centre and Jubilee House. Plans are currently underway to raise $3.5M for a new housing complex called The Anchorage.
Matt has proven his passion for the Valley through his involvement with Rotary, past President of the Comox Valley Community Foundation, as well as his work with the Mayor’s Golf Charity Classic, and the Comox Valley Transition Society.
