Wine Appreciation March Update

3/19/2018

Several Wine Appreciation members were away on holiday this past month but two groups met for evenings of Southern Hemisphere and Olympic-inspired fun.

“Argentinian Malbecs and Southern Hemisphere Whites” was the theme of the wine tasting evening hosted by Jan Harding and Linda and Dave Barfoot. The winning white wine of the evening was a 2017 Sauvignon Blanc from Marlborough New Zealand called "The Ned". The winning red was “1884 Reservado”, a 2016 Malbec from Mendoza, Argentina.

Helen and Marty Dahl went for gold with their Olympic themed wine tasting, dividing the group into two-person teams, complete with accreditation badges showing flag, sport and nicknames. Not only was the food superb, but participants had a quiz at each food/wine station to test their knowledge of the Olympics. “Medals” were awarded (gold, silver and bronze) at the end of the evening, based on the correct answers for matching the correct wines with the description (Diane and Karen had 100% correct, with the two Johns coming in a close 2nd, and Rhett and Judi scoring high on the quiz).  The top favourite wine was the US Knights Valley Berlinger, @ $50. Fabulous fun, and a great way to celebrate Canada’s gold medals of the day.
