Probus Paddlers:  Royston to Sandy Island

6/22/2023

On the longest day of the year, four Probus Paddlers ventured from the Royston launch site.  Our original plan was to go to Tree Island, but with the excellent conditions we decided to extend the trip to Sandy Island.

We paddled past the Seal Islets and, yes, the harbour seals gave us the high flipper!  We landed on the driftwood beaches of Sandy Island and had a leisurely lunch on the logs and enjoyed seeing dense patches of Yellow Sand Verbena in full flower, as seen in the photo.

The tide was ebbing when we landed, so we left the kayaks near the waterline and had a short pack to start our return trip.  The favourable wind and waves on our backs made an easy return trip.

Total trip length was 16 km in 4.5 hours.

Happy Summer Solstice!
