Probus Paddlers Outing May 23rd

5/24/2018

The Probus Paddlers basked in the sun and sand this Wednesday during one of the halcyon days of spring. Craig Bassett led our group of 9 kayakers from near Kin Beach to Kye Bay and Air Force Beach. Calm winds prevailed and our initial energetic paddling slowed as the sandy bottom of Kye Bay revealed colonies of sand dollars clad in black velvet, the odd scuttling crab, and several large fish with a shape that invited comparisons of a bullfrog crossed with an eel… Were they skates? Seal heads popped up regularly to check out the colourful flotilla, and further out to sea some of us paddled by a raft of snoozing sea lions. Capped off with tasty hamburgers and treats at Benino Gelato above Air Force Beach, it was another fabulous outing.

How pleasant to sit on the beach,
On the beach, on the sand, in the sun,
With ocean galore within reach,
And nothing at all to be done!

From a poem by Ogden Nash
