Perfect Autumn Paddle

10/13/2018

It was a superb autumn day for another kayak outing led by Craig Bassett. Our largest kayak group yet, 17 of us, set out from the Courtenay AirPark Marina launch. Craig had wrangled a great rental deal from nearby Comox Valley Kayaks and Canoes so that new paddlers could try out the sport, and even a few seasoned paddlers took advantage of not having to haul their kayaks to the AirPark.

We explored a bit of the outer estuary and then headed up the Courtenay River (okay, “Puntledge River” for those of you who explore it further upstream). Wow, what autumn colour we have in the riverside trees this year, made doubly beautiful in the water’s reflections. As the photos show, additional entertainment was provided by wildlife - eagles, herons, seals and more. Though the river runs through town, it’s amazing how untamed and secluded parts seem when paddling along its surface.

We returned to the AirPark well satisfied with ourselves for having taken advantage of such a lovely sunny afternoon. And it’s hoped that many will join Craig and the kayaking group in the spring when our adventures continue.
