Elk Falls Hike

9/20/2017

It was an overcast but pleasant day on the trails.  We had a brief spatter of rain just before our lunch break that prompted us to don rain jackets, but it only lasted a few minutes.  We started at the generating station and went uphill on the new trail, Station Views, then on to Elk Falls and the suspension bridge.  Then it was back to the Canyon trail down the river and return on the other side.  There were no spawning salmon to be seen.  The bears are still feeding on berries (according to scat).  We met up with a Park Operator who was recording data from the people counters.  She told us that for the month of August they recorded 14,600 vehicles in the new Elk Falls visitor parking lot.  At the time we were at the trail counter on the South side of the river which had recorded 1099 people, including us, in the last 7 days.  Saw a whitewater canoeist playing in the rapids and a couple of groups of whitewater kayakers taking a break on the shore.  It was 10.6 km in 3.5 hrs for the 7 of us.
