One Book - Book Club

Many books contain a great litany of interesting ideas and, often, are difficult to discuss in sufficient depth in just one book club meeting. On the other hand, the One Book – Book Club selects one book per year and the ideas in the book are discussed over the course of four meetings.
The book selected for this year’s One Book – Book Club is a bit of a twist from previous years’ selections. This year’s One Book – Book Club book is Best Canadian Essays 2023, edited by Mireille Silcoff. At each meeting, two essays (on different topics) chosen from Best Canadian Essays 2023 will be selected for discussion. With our focus on only two essays, participants should have sufficient time to share their perspectives on the specific issues highlighted in each essay. Even more importantly, participants will have time to listen to the perspectives of the other group members.
The essays in Best Canadian Essays 2023, edited by Mireille Silcoff. cover a broad range of topics including the perils of family genealogical research, courage in the age of Twitter, false claims to indigenous ancestry, friendship and loneliness and the changing status of work. The essays have previously appeared in a variety of publications such as The Globe and Mail, The Walrus, Best Health Magazine, and other newspapers, magazines, and journals.
Almost all of the essays in Best Canadian Essays 2023 can be found online. Unless the essays are removed from the internet, it won’t be necessary to purchase the book. However, if you would like to purchase the book, it is available through Amazon.
If you think you might be interested in joining this activity, I have included links to three of the essays we will be reading. Before joining, please review the essays and determine for yourself if these sample essays are the kind of reading and discussion topics that you would find interesting.
