A "BAG" of Mixed Responses - Beer Appreciation

On June 19th Dorothy Aubert and Ian Davies hosted the Beer Appreciation Group (BAG) and presented the thirsty groupies with 8 brews themed The Beers Of Summer. Not being serious beer drinkers themselves, they leaned heavily on the staff knowledge in 2 local liquor stores. It was a tastebud adventure, because none of these brews were familiar to any of us. They were:
Dino Sour Rocket Pop, Raspberry Ale, Super Tall Key Lime Sour, I Carried A Watermelon Sour, Killer Cucumber Ale, Wolf German Style Pilsner, North Star Canadian Lager, and a Mexican style beer called Lager Especial Surfeza (from Tofino, naturally). 

We all admired the imaginative artwork on the cans and some of the equally imaginative beer names, but the brews themselves generated a mixed response. Some, like the Wolf pilsner, North Star and Surfeza were favored by the BAGgers because they were refreshing summer drinks that tasted like, um, beer. Most of the others generated a response that would have been appreciated by rival brewmasters. For example, the Super Tall Key Lime Sour generated a response in a couple of tasters that was somewhere between a shudder and a grimace. And most of us had doubts that we would be prepared to annoint our petunias with the "I Carried a Watermelon Sour". 

Dorothy confessed that she began to have doubts about a few choices when the staff member at one of the liquor stores claimed that she was a sommelier and didn't like beer at all.

But let not these descriptions detract from the fun that the group had, the friendly repartee, or the value of being able to avoid ever purchasing a couple of these beverages again.

Without doubt, all of these brews offered a tastebud adventure and we had lots of fun and laughs. Our thanks to Dorothy and Ian for taking on this event and their excellent organization and presentation.  The next BAG event will be at Dave and Sue Martin's.
